Save Money on Landscaping

Whether we’re making preparations  to host our daughter’s wedding reception sometime in the future or are just looking to enjoy our outdoor living space landscaping can seem like more than you can handle . It needn’t be so.  The outdoors can be so generous and absolvitory.  With a little planning and knowing where to look for the decent resources there is much we can do to improve the landscaping of our personal property without spending a lot of money that we just don’t have.

There is no sense at all to purchasing plants to accent a landscape if the soil we put them in will not encourage them to flourish.  The point is to create a spot of beauty and serenity and that means that the plants we put in must have soil that will support them.

This can be accomplished quickly by purchasing compost from a home improvement store or, if the clock is not ticking, create your own using grass clippings, leaves, and vegetable scraps in a pile that is kept moist and turned ofttimes.

Once the soil is ready for plants you can save a lot of money by making your purchases wisely. Sure, it’s easy to run down to that big box store, but there are a number of ways to save money on our plant purchases. For starters, gardening friends often have perennials that need to be divided and need a home. As well, local municipalities and gardening clubs often offer special incentives on trees, shrubs, and other plants that  provide an opportunity to save money . Furthermore, don’t forget that just like anything else, buying plants and compost in the latter part of the season when the nurseries are trying to clear out their stock means savings for the do-it-yourself landscaper.

Of course, the mere choice to provide much or all of our own labor can save a lot of money. Paying someone to swing a digger that we could swing ourselves reduces the number of plants that we can buy.

Lastly, unless you are preparing for a large celebration like a bridal shower that gives you a near deadline, save on financing charges by doing a little bit of landscaping at a time, even spreading the project out over the course of several years. Just be certain that you plan carefully to ensure that you don’t do something this year that will have to be undone next year to do the next step.  But as long as you plan you can create a work in progress on your landscaping that you will be able to enjoy for years to come.
